TRIPLE GODDESS ALTAR DOILIES

doily

There is no needlework that satisfies me more than to crochet doilies. I suppose because it wasn't all that long ago that they were always made by hand. Now the dollar stores have racks of them, but it really isn't quite the same.

Doilies, which always remind me of intricate webs used to be heirlooms. Passed like prized possessions from generation to generation. I learned how to manage the tiny hook, the thin thread by crocheting edging on white ladies handkerchiefs. I was eleven and it seemed like magick even then. How could that small ball of thread become a doily, a covering for the arm of a chair or even a tablecloth? One tiny knot at a time. That's what I learned; not only about crocheting with thread, but also about how we live our lives.
