YULE
DECEMBER 20-22 One of the 4 minor Sabbats, Yule, celebrates the rebirth of the Sun, the Sun God and honors the Horned God. The longest night of the year falls on Yule. Yule is also known as the Winter Solstice, Alban Arthan, Finn's Day, Festival of Sol, Yuletide, Great Day of the Cauldron, and Festival of Growth. The reason the date varies from year to year is that it depends on when the Sun reaches the southern most point in its yearly cycle. For more detailed information about this Sabbat Click Here for Mike Nichols essay. Purpose: To celebrate the coming light, and thank the Gods for seeing us through the longest night. Symbolism & Representations of Yule Color: red, green, white, gold. Herb/Scent holly, mistletoe, evergreens, poinsettia, tropical flowers, bay, pine, ginger, myrrh, valerian, nutmeg, ginger, bayberry. Stone: bloodstone, ruby, garnet, cat's eye. Foods: roasted turkey, caraway rolls, mulled wine, dried fruit, eggnog, pork, beans, gingerbread people. Animal/Creatures: stags, squirrels, wren/robin, phoenix, trolls, memecolion. Goddess: all Spinning Goddesses - Angerona, Eve, Pandora, Tiamat, NuKua God: all Re-Born Sun Gods - Apollo, Balder, Oak/Holly King, Ra, Saturn, Jesus. Others: evergreen trees, Yule log, holly, eight-spoked wheel, wreaths, spinning wheels.. The Yule Altar can go up anytime before Yule; I usually put mine up ten to fourteen days before and take it down within twelve days past the Sabbat. My Yule altars and decorations tend to be extensive with some themes and placements similar from year to year. I burn candles throughout the Yule Tide season. So far it is the only celebration that my family joins me in the Sabbat Ritual. Spell work includes divination, a healthier planet, peace, and focus on the hope and joy associated with birth and birthing.
